An Homage to the Girls Soccer Captains: Lily Weiss and Claudia Freeman

November 12, 2013
Flashback to the summer of 2010: Lily Weiss and Claudia Freeman show up to their first pre-season soccer practice, only to realize that they are the lone Freshman. Being the only Freshman on the varsity soccer team could not have prepared Claudia and Lily any better for their future responsibilities.
Now let’s flash-forward to Fall 2013, when Claudia and Lily kicked off their senior year by being named co-captains of Berkeley Carroll’s girl’s soccer team. This was a huge honor for both students, as being named captain is not only an acknowledgement of athletic excellence but also recognition of their sportsmanship, attitude, and leadership on and off the field. In addition to being co-captains, Claudia and Lily also participate in the peer-leadership program. The program connects freshman with a selected group of seniors for the year and acts as an arena for support and mentorship. Freeman and Weiss use their experience in peer to their advantage when leading younger players on the soccer field. The freshman on the team look to their two captains for guidance and advice on the field and in their everyday school experiences at Berkeley Carroll. Claudia and Lily are described by teammates and peers as two of the most personable and easy to talk to people you will find at Berkeley Carroll. Our school is lucky to have student-athletes like Claudia and Lily to mentor and guide our young athletes on their path to success on the field and in the classroom.
Freeman and Weiss led the girl’s soccer team to a respectable 6-7-2 record, making it all the way to PSAA semifinals The season was highlighted by huge wins against Portledge, L.R.E.I. and a 6-1 defeat of rival Friends Seminary. Claudia Freeman and Lily Wiess have both been playing on the varsity level for four years; they’ve been a part of Berkeley Carroll soccer through the good times and the rough times. Even when the going got tough, both captains never failed to be model student-athletes and class-act competitors. Freeman and Weiss hope to leave Berkeley Carroll Soccer with a legacy in which their younger players will continue to carry-out. They hope their example will lead the younger players to be leaders and model-student athletes themselves. Berkeley Carroll thanks Claudia and Lily for their efforts and devotion to the soccer program as well as the Berkeley Carroll community as a whole. We all wish you continued success in your future endeavors and thank you for leaving your mark on Berkeley Carroll Athletics.
